Traffic Engineering Lab

  1. Read this excerpt from the book Movement by Thalia Verkade and Marco te Brömmelstroet.
How do they see traffic engineering? What sort of language, what sorts of metaphors, what sort of approach doe they see traffic engineering using? What sorts of problems do they see with this approach?
  2. Read this excerpt from the “Need and Purpose” Statement for the I-440 widening project at I-440 and Wade Avenue.
Do you see any of the approaches of traffic engineering mentioned in Movement in this piece. What sort of arguments are made for the construction of this project? Do you think you can see the “asphalt machine” at work here? Why? Optional: Look at this piece on “Induced Demand,” how highway widening projects lead to more traffic and more traffic jams.
  3. Write 500 words where the authors of Movement offer what you would imagine their critique of the I440 project would be. In what ways do you think their approach would be different from the approach of the authors of the “Need and Purpose” statement? Alternatively, you could write how the authors of the I440 project report wold critique the excerpt from Movement. Submit through Moodle by class time on Sept 28.
